Listening comprehension - to be frank - was never much of a problem to me. Most of the texts are quite easy as the accents are mainly standard. I always treated listening and reading as a great source of points

Sure - I've had almost all of available points from those two papers (only one 'ran away' in Reading ). But the Culture was extremely difficult this year - there were 10 sentences and you had to correct one false information in each... Slaughtery I've got only 3, maybe 4 points - sentences about Sillicon Valley (which is famous for computer, not cinema industry ), Pulitzer awards, William the Conqueror (who won the battle of Hastings in 1066 instead of Richard Lionheart, who never existed ) and.. that's all, as far as I remember. The other sentences were (for example):

"The song which is sung in New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in America and Britain is "Auld Lang Syne" written by Robert Bruce."

"Melting pot" is the name used for American traditional dish."

"First English people who came to America, called 'Pilgrim Fathers' arrived there in 1720 and set up a colony named Plymouth"

And about the questions. The first you mentioned were obvius to me but the ones singled out are a bit harder But not too hard

About Robert Burns - It was clear for me, that it was'nt written by Bruce (he was a Scottish duke - compare with "Braveheart" ) but I had no idea who could write it in fact .

Whoa... There's such a fine topic here and I don't know about it... This is what I would call 'paranoia'...

As I've been reading throughout the thread, one thing has cought my eye- you guys are using this beautiful, but quite hard to master language with much more fineness that I coul ever suspect you of! And your vocabulary... A man can fall into complexes reading you...

Nevertheless, I'll try to join the discussion. Sorry (from the mountain- I love this translation!) for my own vocabulary and grammar, as my FCE learning days are long gone... Mayby I'll make the CAE or PRO someday. Maybe it'd be becouse of you guys?

One thing I can say about vacbulary is that the best way to learn it is practise. For those, who have M:tG cards or other collectable cards- try to sit down, take a dictionary and translate their names. If they have flavour texts, you may do the same, though they tend to be easier than the names.

If not for this idea, I think I would never know what the verb "to shriek" means... (No, I'm not telling it here- I think it'll be best if you look it up for yourselves if you don't know it...)

Phew... It's not for my memory unfortunately...

But I'd like to share some of my favourite english words. I like them not becouse of grammatical, etc. reasons. They're just connected with fantasy.

A collection of words describing magic-wielding people:

Wizard, warlock, mage, magi, sorcerer, conjurer, necromancer...

(There were more I think, but I can't remember them. Feel free to fill this list up.)

Swords and other weaponary:

Sword (bastard sword, longsword, short sword, two handed sword, broadsword), cutlass, sabre, scimitar, rapier, skewer, dagger, halberd, flail, morningstar, axe, club. pike, spear...

Again, here my memory gives up.

Unfortunately you're wrong. The last time I played Diablo was maybe three years ago... If we want to dip into the 'games pool' looking for inspiration, I'd choose the Baldur's Gate Saga, maybe a liitle Might and Magic as for the weaponary. As for the mages, I truly can't recall my inspirations besides HoMM2 for the Wizard/Warlock/Sorcerer combination.

The rest comes from looking up polish words in my dictionary... I think that this is the only category of words that I can remember permanently almost instantly.

Boy, I'm sleepy and I think that this post reflects that. I'd better go back to my work...
